About this project
The difficulties of living in poverty are not limited to raising capital. Families are also hindered through lack of awareness, access, and affordability of health care. The reality is that 70% of illnesses in poor communities are preventable but many of these illnesses continue to prevail due to lack of access to health services.
In Bihar, India, 3 out of 4 people do not have a toilet, so open defecation is a common practice, which leads to pollution and amplifying the spread of diseases. A common illness such as diarrhea can, unfortunately, be deadly in these communities. Furthermore, 1 in 2 children are stunted due to poor nutrition and infection which will go on to impair their future development. With financial insecurity, poor health and sanitation awareness impacts the wellbeing of families in impoverished communities. Empowered local women provide an effective solution.
Opportunity is changing this reality by training microfinance clients as Basic Health Care Providers in partnership with Cashpor and the Healing Fields Foundation.
Basic Health Care Providers are local women who are trained to teach their communities basic health, hygiene and nutrition education, while also providing health-related products and services such as sanitary napkins, first-aid, and loans to improve access to clean water and sanitation.
Each Basic Health Care Worker is tasked with reaching 200 families or 1000 people with a number of sessions that will provide simple life-saving health tips, hygiene and nutrition knowledge. As health leaders, these women earn community respect, and become a trusted source of health knowledge for their communities.
Today, over 4,000 health leaders have reached nearly 5 million people at a cost of less than $5 per family.
In India, your giving is helping to build healthier communities in the northern states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh – places where many of the nation’s poorest and most socially excluded live. When one woman is trained as a health worker, she can ensure the sustained health of her entire community.
Your contribution of $1,200 will EmpowerHER to train as a Basic Health Care Provider and give her the tools she needs to support over 1,000 people with life-saving health, hygiene and nutrition knowledge.
Your Support Will Help
